Grain: 5.5 lb. American 2-row
1 lb. German Munich
1 lb. Belgian aromatic
1 lb. American crystal 60L
.75 lb. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils)
.75 lb. American chocolate
.25 lb. American black patent
.75 lb. Roasted barley
1 lb. Flaked oats
Mash: 66% efficiency
Collected 6.5 gal of wort sg= 1.032 @ 120d. adjust to 66% efficiency. Used 1.75 lbs. of dry malt extract to bring sg to approximately 1.058.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.071 5 gallons
1 lb. 6 oz. Light dry malt extract
6 oz. Dark dry malt extract
Irish Moss added last 15 mins.
Hops: 1 oz. Challenger (6.5% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Kent Goldings (5.75% AA, 45 min.)
1 oz. Kent Goldings (5.75% AA, 30 min.)
.5 oz. Kent Goldings (5.75% AA, 15 min.)
Yeast: Safale dry yeast. Collected 1 pint of wort (first sparge running), and added 2 bottles of Guinness, with 2 tbls. dme, and boiled for starter.
Log: Brewed 10/13/02.
Carbonation: 3/4 tsp. corn sugar in each 12 oz. bottle.
Tasting: Bottled 11/22/02. Gold & Black bow, private stock cap. Tasted 12/13/02--this is so good, it will only get better with age. Black color, good head, perfect hop/malt balance, with chocolate and roasted barley overtones. Dont change anything.
