Frog Spit Stout

Simple to make, good taste. Based on the Toad Spit Stout from TCJHB.

Brewer: Scott Hayes Email: shayes10@concentric.net
Beer: Frog Spit Stout Style: stout
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5 gallons
Color:
176 HCU
Bitterness: 12 IBU
OG: 1.065 FG: 1.010
Alcohol: 7.1% v/v (5.6% w/w)
Grain: 12 oz. American black patent
12 oz. Roasted barley
Steep: Put grains in cold water, brought to boil, and let boil 5 min. prior
to removing.
Boil: 65 minutes SG 1.217 1.5 gallons
3.3 lb. Dark malt extract (Munton & Fison)
4 lb. Dark dry malt extract
8 tsp. gypsum added to boil. 2 tsp. Moss added to final 15.
Hops: 1.5 oz. Bullion (8.5% AA, 60 min.)
.5 oz. Bullion (8.5% AA, 5 min.)
Yeast: At the time, was using dry yeast; used Edme ale yeast; would likely
get better results with liquid yeasts.
Log: 9-1-91: brewed.
9-23-91: racked.
10-13-91: racked again and bottled.
Carbonation: 3/4 c. priming corn sugar.
Tasting: Bitter-sweet chocolate undertones. nice beer. It may be just my
imagination, but I thought that boiling the specialty grains instead
of just steeping them added something to this beer. (Also, next time,
I wouldn't leave it on the trub so long.)
