Very Fine Narleywine 2

This is my second barleywine adventure, and I wanted to make sure it was hopped up enough!!! My first barleywine was good, but not hoppy enough for my liking. This is my attempt at cloning Old Dominion Millennium barleywine, my favorite all time beer, until this one.

Brewer: Gary Slafka Email: GSlafka@aol.com
Beer: Very Fine Narleywine 2 Style: Barley Wine
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5.0 gallons
Color:
53 HCU (~23 SRM)
Bitterness: 156 IBU
OG: 1.129 FG: 1.028
Alcohol: 13.1% v/v (10.3% w/w)
Grain: 3.0 lb. American crystal 60L
4.0 oz. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils)
Steep: Take note that I boiled 6 gallons, using two different pots. I used approximately 1/2 of a mix of all grains, and 1/2 mix of all hops in each pot. Steep grains until boil. This unorthodoxed method may explain why my OG number was different from the calculator's OG.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.108 6.0 gallons
14.0 lb. Light malt extract
2.0 lb. Honey
After boil starts add the malt extract and honey and boil for full 60 minutes.
Hops: 3.0 oz. Chinook (13.2% AA, 60 min.)
1.0 oz. Nugget (12.7% AA, 60 min.)
3.0 oz. Northern Brewer (6.6% AA, 30 min.)
1.5 oz. Willamette (4.8% AA, 5 min.)
1.5 oz. Willamette (aroma)
Yeast: American #1056
Log: 5/25/2001 Initial fermentation.
6/10/2001 Second fermentation and dry hopping with 1.5 oz
Willamette, not aroma as shown.
6/23/2001 Bottled.
Comments The above numbers are not all correct. The OG was
actually 1104, which results in a 10.1% alcohol content.
As far as the ending IBU's number, I just know it's hoppy!
Carbonation: 2.9 volumes Corn Sugar: 4.99 oz. for 4.5 gallons @ 70°F
I normally add a 5.0 oz package of corn sugar to every batch of beer I brew.
Tasting: I first tasted this beer in mid August with wonderful results. It has a deep copper color, with a very nice malty and hoppy aroma. At first sip it bangs you with a very full, malty mouthfeel, and a stinging of alcohol. It then finishes with a wonderfully blended hoppiness, a perfect balance of malt and hops. Although not an exact match of Old Dominion's Millenium, this is one helluva barleywine.
