Coal Porter

This is a repeat recipe that I have just now written down.
It is inspired by Bob Barrar's (Iron Hill Brewery, Media, PA)
Bourbon Porter. If you happen to ever be in the area, stop by and try it. Ye haw!

Beer: Coal Porter Style: English Brown
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5.7 gallons
Color:
188 HCU
Bitterness: 35 IBU
OG: 1.055 FG: 1.015
Alcohol: 5.2% v/v (4.1% w/w)
Water: Upper Darby city water...........
Grain: 1 lb. British crystal 135-165L
1 lb. British chocolate
Steep: I steep the grains for a while, letting them sit in cold water for a couple hours before turning the heat up. As soon as it approached boil, I remove the grain sock.
Boil: 90 minutes SG 1.105 3 gallons
6.4 lb. Dark dry malt extract
1/2 tsp Irish Moss @10 minutes out.
Hops: 1 oz. Northern Brewer (7.8% AA, 90 min.)
1 oz. Northern Brewer (7.8% AA, 60 min.)
.5 oz. Fuggles (5% AA, 15 min.)
.5 oz. Fuggles (aroma)
Yeast: EasYeast London Ale
Log: At bottling, add 3/4 cup real vanilla or vanilla extract. Then add
1cup of Bourbon, I use Old Grandad or Jack Daniel's, but
preferrably the former as it has a more distinct flavor in the beer.
For some reason this beer takes twice as long to bottle condition
and is at it's peak flavor at about 4-6 weeks after bottling day!
I hope you enjoy it!
Tasting: The cascade when you pour will be beautiful. The head is a nice golden/cream color and the retention should be great. The vanilla ends up right up front and lingers through the back end and is joined there by the little kick from the bourbon. This is a very malty beer that many people that don't like "dark" beer and were forced to try it, ended up begging for seconds. It's also my father-in-law's favorite, to include commercial brews, so I have to regularly stock this in my cupboard!
