Black Hole

I made this dark lager to see how nice the flavour and aroma of Green Bullet hops would come through. It was very bitter to taste at 4 weeks, but after 10 weeks it mellowed out signfificantly. I might enter it into the National Competition in October 2001.

Type: Partial mash Size: 15 liters
Color:
39 HCU (~18 SRM)
Bitterness: 21 IBU
OG: 1.054 FG: 1.016
Alcohol: 4.9% v/v (3.9% w/w)
Water: Aqua Pura a la Auckland (soft water)
Grain: 3.3kg German Pilsner
137g British chocolate
Mash: 75% efficiency
Mash in at 45° C for 30 minutes, then raise temperature to 55° C for 30 minutes, then to 65° C for 45 minutes. Confirm that starch end point has been reached before mashing out at 75° C.
Boil: 120 minutes SG 1.041 20 liters
Teaspoonful of Irish Moss added after 110 minutes.
Hops: 6g Green Bullet (13% AA, 60 min.)
5g Green Bullet (13% AA, 30 min.)
10g Green Bullet (aroma)
Yeast: 11g Saflager yeast (very clean lager yeast).
Log: Mashed on 14 January, 2001
Fermented at about 20° C
Bottled on 21 January, 2001
Carbonation: 5g of sugar per 750ml bottle
Tasting: Green Bullet hops have a beautiful, distinctive, flavour. The aroma is also more attractive than you might expect for a high alpha hop.
