Rye PA

Very good interpretation of Terrapin Rye PA, 2002 GABF Gold Medal Winner.

Brewer: ChriSto Email: -
Beer: Rye PA Style: American Pale Ale
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5 gallons
Color:
9 HCU (~7 SRM)
Bitterness: 47 IBU
OG: 1.055 FG: 1.012
Alcohol: 5.6% v/v (4.4% w/w)
Water: Savannah tap
Grain: 8 oz. American crystal 10L
8 oz. Flaked rye
1 lb. American 2-row
Steep: 45 minutes steeped at 151° in 1 gallon of water. Ran 2 qts of 170° water to rinse.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.046 6 gallons
5 lb. 8 oz. Light dry malt extract
Irish Moss at 15 minutes.
Hops: .8 oz. Nugget (13.2% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (5.3% AA, 15 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (aroma)
Yeast: Nottingham Dry. Wyeast 1056 or WLP California would work well too.
Log: Primary 8 days, secondary 8 days. Aroma hops were added at flame out but could be dry-hopped.
Carbonation: 7/8 cup of priming sugar.
Tasting: It was ready to drink in 5 days. Nice rye flavor. More bitter than Terrapin, but pretty darn good - could cut Nugget (actually used 1 oz.) to half at 60 and rest at 30 minutes to really clone. Has a real grapefruit tang from Cascades.
