Luscious Brown Ale

This is a variation of Papazian's Elbro Nerkte Brown Ale.
This is an incredibly simple recipe that yields a phenomenal,
luscious brown ale.

Beer: Luscious Brown Ale Style: American Brown
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5 gallons
Color:
113 HCU (~38 SRM)
Bitterness: 27 IBU
OG: 1.054 FG: 1.014
Alcohol: 5.2% v/v (4.1% w/w)
Water: Used grocery store (Star Market) bottled spring water.
The 2+ gallons of water in the carboy were boiled for
10 minutes and cooled before addition.
Grain: 8 oz. British crystal 70L
8 oz. Belgian chocolate
Steep: Specialty malts were steeped until brew water came to a boil.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.091 3 gallons
7 lb. Dark malt extract
0.5 tsp. Irish moss added for last 15 minutes of boil
Hops: 2.07 oz. Fuggles (4.75% AA, 60 min.)
0.52 oz. Fuggles (4.75% AA, 5 min.)
Yeast: Wyeast 1056 - American Ale Yeast
Pitched 2 cups of starter culture.
Log: Brewed Aug. 13, 2000.
Bottled Aug. 26, 2000.
Carbonation: Primed with 1.25 cups LME in 2 cups water.
Tasting: Wow! I brewed this recipe because I was busy researching other,
more complicated recipes. I didn't have high expectations for
this beer, but it turned out great. It's a rich, luscious brown
with nice hop flavor and a wonderful head. A very well balanced beer.
