Too Late Nut-Brown

This is a nut-brown Style beer that started out as a Newcastle
Clone. It didn't work out as a Newcastle, but is really a great beer

Brewer: Steve Ripple Email: sripple@bridgernet.com
Beer: Too Late Nut-Brown Style: English Brown
Type: All grain Size: 6.5 gallons
Color:
49 HCU (~22 SRM)
Bitterness: 23 IBU
OG: 1.047 FG: 1.015
Alcohol: 4.1% v/v (3.2% w/w)
Water: I used water straight out of the tap - It's relatively clorine-free
and medium hard.
Grain: 7 lb. Belgian pale
1 lb. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils)
1 lb. British crystal 50-60L
1 lb. British crystal 95-115L
3 oz. British chocolate
1.5 oz. British black patent
Mash: 83% efficiency
Add 10 quarts of 176° water to the grain. Only acheived a temp of
146, so heated to 162 oops. Added ice down to 156°. Added heat three
times to keep at 156°. Was slow in converting. Mashed for 2 hours
45 minutes. Maybe the iodine test isn't accurate since my mash effic-
iency was at 83%!.
Sparged with 6 gallons of 180° water rsulting in 7 gallons of wort.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.044 7 gallons
Hops: 1 oz. Northern Brewer (8% AA, 60 min.)
.33 oz. Kent Goldings (aroma)
Yeast: London Ale yeast - Wyeast.
Log: Fermented at 175° for one week. Then in secondary for three weeks at
170°.
Carbonation: Bottled with 1/2 cup dextrose.
Tasting: Really has a nutty flavor. Hops in the background with a nice maltiness
Quite a good Nut-Brown ale.
