North by Northwest Porter

This is a slightly modified less hoppy version of the 2005 Big Brew "Positively Porter" - still very hoppy but quite good.

Brewer: Christo Email: -
Beer: North by Northwest Porter Style: Robust Porter
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5 gallons
Color:
150 HCU (~46 SRM)
Bitterness: 58 IBU
OG: 1.059 FG: 1.012
Alcohol: 6.0% v/v (4.7% w/w)
Water: Savannah tap
Grain: 1 lb. Belgian Special B
4 oz. American black patent
8 oz. British chocolate
4 oz. Roasted barley
Steep: Grain bag at heat turn on. Water raised to 155° (about 15 minutes). Turn off heat and steep for 30 minutes. Turn heat back on til 170° and remove grain bag.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.059 5 gallons
6 lb. Light dry malt extract
Irish moss added at 15 minutes. Cooled with chiller in 5 minutes.
Hops: .75 oz. Nugget (12% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Chinook (12% AA, 30 min.)
1 oz. Chinook (aroma)
Yeast: Nottingham dry rehydrated.
Log: Brewed 5/6/05. Racked 5/12/05. Bottled 5/23/05.
Carbonation: 3/4 cup priming sugar.
Tasting: Beautiful color (right on chart), toffee aroma, some hop notes but not as great as would be expected with amount and type of aroma hop used. Slight malt to start but goes to bitter quickly and lingers. Definitely a hopped version (did not want to go with the 76 IBU's in the Big Brew recipe), but going to enjoy. Will make in the 35-40 IBU hop range next time.
