First Down Brown

A very malty, dangerously drinkable brown ale. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon with the boys. Ahh... Thank God football's back!

Type: All grain Size: 5.2 gallons
Color:
46 HCU (~20 SRM)
Bitterness: 38 IBU
OG: 1.057 FG: 1.010
Alcohol: 6.0% v/v (4.7% w/w)
Water: 5.2 mash stabilizer for mash water. Other than that, good old Turtle Creek municipal H2O.
Grain: 7 lb. American 2-row
8 oz. American crystal 80L
8 oz. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils)
4 oz. American chocolate
2 oz. Roasted barley
8 oz. Flaked oats
8 oz. American victory
Mash: 75% efficiency
Mash at 1.5 quarts per pound (3.5 gal) at 155 for 60 min. Sparge with 170 water to collect 6.5 gal.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.045 6.5 gallons
1 lb. Buckwheat Honey
Add honey and 1 tsp irish moss last 15 minutes. Add aroma hops at flameout.
Hops: .75 oz. Horizon (11% AA, 60 min.)
.5 oz. Willamette (4.6% AA, 30 min.)
.5 oz. Willamette (aroma)
Yeast: Yeast cake from secondary fermentation of Terrapin Reprise IPA (Wyeast 1056).
Carbonation: 2.5 volumes Keg: 12.3 psi @ 40°F
Keg and force carbonate to 2.5 volumes.
